Individual Health Insurance Companies Selected To Do Business in California

Covered California will provide coverage opportunities to 5.3 million residents of the state, a good portion of whom will be eligible for subsidies to assist with their health insurance costs. The state has approved 13 plans that will be available to consumers in the fall of 2013 for coverage beginning the following January.

Approved Plans

  • Alameda Alliance for Health
  • Anthem Blue Cross of California
  • Blue Shield of California
  • Chinese Community Health Plan
  • Contra Costa Health Services
  • Health Net
  • Kaiser Permanente
  • L.A. Care Health Plan
  • Sharp Health Plan
  • Valley Health Plan
  • Ventura County Healthcare Plan
  • Western Health Advantage

All of these plans were vetted by the state as being in compliance with state and federal requirements, and represent the full range of larger health insurers and smaller companies, providing optimal choice for consumers. The approved plans also cover a wide range of plan affordability and varying benefit levels, allowing patients to determine their ideal plan from a wide range of quality options.

These plans also include the ten Essential Health Benefits required by the Affordable Care Act, including laboratory services, prescription drugs, hospitalization, ambulance services, emergency services, maternity and newborn care, mental health services, preventive care, and pediatric services. The final plans selected were chosen after a careful evaluation of numerous factors, including promoting wellness and prevention, affordability for the consumer, access to quality care for patients, reducing health disparities, and ability to operate with speed and agility.

Rates will vary based on the individual characteristics of the applicant, of course, as well as the region, but some preliminary numbers have been released. Considering the Silver Plan, there are three separate plans offered under this umbrella. The average of those three plans (throughout all 19 regions) is $321 for the premium. Consumers will have the option of selecting coverage at four different bands: bronze, silver, gold, and platinum. The decision to select a plan from the variety of options available can feel overwhelming, which is why speaking with a licensed insurance agent can help you determine the plan that best suits your budget and your healthcare needs. Small differences in plans can add up to big benefits, so contact an agent for a consultation today.
